E. SYLVESTER VIZI is a Hungarian physician, neuroscientist, pharmacologist and university professor who served as President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 2002 and 2008. He has worked as a clinical pharmacologist since 1980. Dr. Vizi is guest professor of psychiatry and anesthesiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, New York, N.Y. He was inducted into the Academia Europaea in 1992. Professor Vizi was a Riker Fellow at the Department of Pharmacology of the University of Oxford from 1967 to 1969, where he worked alongside Sir William Paton. He has been a visiting professor at the universities of Mainz and Parma.

He is a professor at the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotheraphy at the Semmelweis University of Medicine, Budapest, Hungary and the Head of Department of Pharmacology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He has been a member of Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) since 1985. His areas of research: brain, immune system, the nervous system in general, chemical neurotransmission in particular.

His widespread academic work has been recognized by numerous awards and prizes, including Prize of Hungarian Academy of Science; Issekutz Medal; Hungarian Pharmacological Society Issekutz Prize; Széchenyi Award; Markusovszky Medal; Miklós Jancsó Award; Knight of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem; Antal Genersich Award; Middle Cross of the Order of the Hungarian Republic; Galileo Galilei Award; Semmelweis Ignác Emlékérem,(Semmelweis Medical School); Doctor Honoris Causa Tirgu Mures (Romania); The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star, Japan; Pro Meritis Academiae Gold Medal (European Academy of Science and Arts); Foreign Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences; Doctor Honoris Causa of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences; Prima Primisszima Prize; Istvan Weszpremi Prize; Grastyan Award; Bathory Award.

He is the father of two children. His wife, Veronika Ádám, is a professor of biochemistry at the Semmelweis University and also a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
